Frequently asked questions

When are museums in Lithuania free?

On the last Sunday of every month. On that day Lithuania's national and state museums open their permanent expositions free of charge. The initiative has been running since 1 January 2019.

Is everything free to visit?

The permanent expositions are free. Temporary exhibitions and special events may still be paid — check the museum's website before your visit.

Do I need to register or get a ticket?

No advance registration is needed — just show up. Some museums issue a free ticket at the desk. At the most popular venues it's worth arriving early.

Which museums take part?

National and state museums under the Ministry of Culture and their branches — 76 places across Lithuania in total. See the full list on the Museums page.

Does the programme cover all of Lithuania?

Yes — museums in 17 cities and towns take part: from Vilnius and Kaunas to Palanga and Anykščiai.

Why are some museums marked as closed?

Some branches are temporarily closed for reconstruction or exposition renewal. We flag them in the list — check the museum's website before travelling.

Who runs the free Sundays?

It's an initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, running since 2019. Official information is published at lrkm.lrv.lt.

Sekmadienis is an independent guide. We verify each museum against the official scheme, but hours can change — always worth a quick check.
